Looking at this statement, if you have concluded that I have omitted to put the minus sign before 1, or that it is a printing error, it is not correct. This is not a mathematical equation. I need to explain what I mean by this.
Let us come to “1†first. By this I mean the top position, what we normally call “Number 1†position. I am referring to your organization becoming a “Number 1†company among the companies of its class. As employees of the company, what can we do to make this happen?
Apart from right attitude, competence and integrity, we need to retain in us and enhance certain positive qualities, and give up certain negative qualities to take our company to the top.
I am talking about Anger, Ego and Jealousy as the three qualities that one needs to keep under check.
When people do things which we do not expect, or do not do things which we expect, we get angry. Anger is a natural human reaction. While the anger cannot be easily controlled, the aftereffects of anger can be. Anger is heat. Heat is energy. Following the principles of Physics, it is possible to channel the heat of anger into productive activities. It does not mean that we should not reprimand the wrong doers. We should do so, not under the influence of anger, but with a cool mind. Such actions will not hurt others and also will make us more effective.
Let us come to the second quality that needs to be kept under check, Ego. Praise from others, as well as success, can bring ego into our head. Ego clashes are the source of most of the interpersonal problems. Once again one cannot be in an ego less state, but one can certainly keep once ego under check.
What do you love most, asks the teacher. We love name, fame, wealth, prosperity, kith and kin and so on are the answers. Absolutely fine.
What should we love most, asks the teacher this time, and goes on to clarify. We should love our efforts most. If we do this, success will not go into our head causing ego, but make us take up new tasks, with renewed efforts, on an ongoing basis. We do not get tired of success.
Jealousy is the third negative quality, that we need to guard ourselves against. How do we do this?
Thoughts are like seeds. Once we sow them, and provide appropriate conditions, they grow into plants. In this context, we have to avoid wasteful thoughts. If we nurture wasteful thoughts, they get transformed into unsatisfied desires, and lead to jealousy, causing heartburn and sometimes even perverted actions. Instead, we can encourage our minds to entertain powerful thoughts, which get translated into powerful actions, and make us more productive.
These negative qualities are natural to all human beings. It is not easy to overcome their influence. However, awareness of these qualities is the first step towards gaining control over them.
Having said so much about the negative qualities, let us what we mean by “2â€, the two positive qualities that matter the most. They are Tolerance and Cooperation. In fact they are great powers.
Tolerance is a state of mind. It should be distinguished from lenience. Understanding the limitations of others, and the environment, not losing self balance over situations, and acting purely with the objective to achieve results is tolerance.
You fight with me, but I shall cooperate with you should be our spirit. I cooperate with you, not because I am Gandhiji, but because organizational interest is my priority. If all of us can inculcate the spirit of cooperation, and work with organizational interest as our top most priority, there will be no looking back for our organization.
I hope, now, all can appreciate what I mean by 2-3 = 1.
Thank you for your attention.
